VNIT Evaluates Bamboo Crash Barrier on NH-30

Reports from highway authorities cover the first months of a barrier's life. An evaluation by an engineering institute after about two years in service adds a different kind of evidence. This article summarises the VNIT Nagpur evaluation of the Kooch Kavach site on NH-30.

Who evaluated it and when

Faculty from the civil engineering department of VNIT Nagpur inspected the NH-30 site on 27 September 2025, about two years after the barrier was installed in October 2023. Their report is dated October 2025.

The site had gone through traffic, including a loaded trailer impact in November 2023, and at least two monsoon seasons.

What they found

The evaluation recorded no weathering of the barrier. It recorded that the bolts were intact. These are the two things that tend to fail first on a roadside barrier in a humid climate, so they are reasonable indicators of how the barrier has aged.

What they said about suitability

VNIT noted that engineered bamboo is especially suitable for coastal and corrosion-prone regions. In those regions, steel barriers rust faster and need earlier repair or replacement. A bamboo-based system with a protective coating does not corrode in the same way.

What they recommended

VNIT recommended that the barrier be considered for adoption under MoRTH, NHAI, state PWD and PMGSY works, and that it be included in IRC codes. This is a recommendation from an academic institute, and it is addressed to the agencies that write the standards.

How to read this evaluation

The evaluation covers one site after two years. It is not a substitute for long-term monitoring, which continues. It is, however, an independent academic view alongside the authority reports in Wani to Warora, Raipur to Simga and Thane.

The full project sequence is in the Kooch Kavach story. For project information, see Kooch Kavach: World's First Bamboo Crash Barrier.
